Warcraft Campaign Milestone 4: Combat
While not all of the specific locations for combat are completed, general balance and abilities have been assigned. I wanted to see how well militia worked to fill the player's ranks while not being so important that the player can't win without them.
I also took a bit of time to balance early gameplay. Because you only recruit militia, which are significantly weaker than the orcs, the two footsoldiers you start with come with drops in case either of them die. These drops offer the player 2 strength, and also a brief buff on the surviving footsoldier for significant damage. With this, the idea is that the player will struggle, but still have an opportunity to survive.
The item dropped is actually a custom version of the Medallion of Courage item found in the game. Not only does it have its own flavor text, but I wanted to give the hero 0 intellect so that he never displayed having mana. This was to enforce the concept that he is captain of a town guard, not an important paladin. As such, all of his abilities are unit abilities rather than hero abilities, that force him to swap between his troops and himself in order to win.
It also took a while to learn how to keep each unit off of one another until the appropriate time, but I think it turned out okay! Next up: The final fight!
